State Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) today presented a resolution to Paul’s Place Restaurant & Bakery for the 12th Senate District’s Small Business of the Year. In June, Paul and Teresa Ybarra, owners of Paul’s Place, were honored during a ceremony in Sacramento.
“While small businesses are the backbone to any economy, they can also be the heart of the community. For more than 25 years, Paul’s Place Restaurant and Bakery has continually shown their commitment to both their employees and customers,” said Cannella. “I was honored to present Paul and Teresa with the Small Business of the Year award to recognize just how important they and their business are to the Merced community.”
In 2012, a fire forced a closure of the Paul’s Place. Each employee was paid their full salaries for two months during repairs and remodeling, and each returned to work when the restaurant reopened. Today, Paul’s Place has fully recovered from the fire and celebrated its 25th anniversary on May 25, 2014.
There are approximately 3.6 million small businesses in California, representing 99% of the state’s employers and 52% of California’s private-sector employment. Since the award’s establishment in 2000, legislators have recognized small businesses in their districts for their contributions to the local economy and for their community and charitable service.
