SACRAMENTO – Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) welcomed the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, to the Senate Floor today. Prime Minister Costa’s visit to the state is to focus on the opportunities for trade, investment, and economic cooperation between Portugal and the State of California.
“Our relationship with Portugal and those of Portuguese ancestry has a long, fruitful history,” said Cannella. “I welcome and am honored by the Prime Minister’s visit, and look forward to continued economic prosperity and cultural collaboration with Portugal.”
In April, Senator Cannella introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 135 to declare June 10 as Portugal Day, which celebrates Portuguese national heritage and our Portuguese-American communities.
The Resolution, in part, states that Portuguese Americans have made valuable and substantial contributions to every facet of California life, such as within the thriving agricultural communities of the Santa Clara and San Joaquin Valleys and through service in local, state, and federal office. Today over 350,000 Portuguese Americans reside in California.
In addition to presenting SCR 135 this morning, Senator Cannella also recognized members of the California Portuguese American Coalition in the Senate Gallery. Their mission is to unite Portuguese-American elected officials and civic leaders in order to facilitate stronger collaboration in the advancement of the interests of the Portuguese-American community in California.
