Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) today issued the following statement regarding UC President Janet Napolitano's decision of freezing tuition rates for the 2014 summer semester.
"I am encouraged that President Napolitano has decided to freeze summer semester tuition rates and believe this is a strong first step in the right direction; however, President Napolitano stated unless the UC receives increased state funding, tuition will increase as much as 5% this fall -- and this will have devastating effects on our students and families," said Cannella. "The UC System was built for the public by the public with the goal of providing world-class, affordable education to Californians and I look forward to working together to ensure this mission is upheld."
In December, Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Cannella introduced Senate Constitutional Amendment (SCA) 1, an amendment that would require more transparency and fiscal accountability from the University of California.
“There's no question the education the UC provides is world-class but there must be more oversight, transparency and accountability," said Cannella. "SCA 1 will give the legislature and the public the power to hold the UC responsible and accountable while maintaining their academic independence, allowing them to return the focus on what’s most important -- the students.”
