Sen. Cannella Secures Critical Public Safety Funding

Needed for Essential Upgrades To Mendota, Huron and Firebaugh Police Headquarters

SACRAMENTO – State Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) today announced that funding included in this year’s proposed state budget will provide critically needed upgrades and new construction to several police headquarters in the 12th Senate District.

“Public safety is a primary role of government, and our local law enforcement must have the tools to keep our communities safe,” said Cannella. “I want to thank our local police chiefs and city leaders who were instrumental in defining their need, which was key to convincing the Governor and my fellow legislators that it deserved inclusion in this year’s budget funding.”

Senator Cannella introduced legislation earlier this year (Senate Bill 1307) as a vehicle for this funding, while working with members of the Legislature and the Brown Administration to ensure its inclusion in the FY 2016-17 state budget.  This appropriation will benefit the cities of Mendota, Huron, and Firebaugh, whose police departments have been working out of nearly-uninhabitable facilities for far too long.

“The men and women of our department are very appreciative of Senator Cannella’s effort to secure this funding,” said Chief Gregg Andreotti, Mendota Police Department. “Undoubtedly, we will be more effective in keeping the public safer with facilities that meet the needs of our community now and for decades to come.”

All told, over $6 million will be directed to these cities to ensure their police departments have appropriate operational space. The funding is included in the main budget bill, SB 826, for which the legislative deadline to pass is June 15, with a signature by the Governor due by June 30.
